It has a clever script, well choreographed actions scenes, and is a fresh idea on a an overused idea. It is probably the most original vampire film ever made. It gets an A- on my report card. The year is 2019, and most of the population is vampires. It is a society where no one wants to be human anymore. Vampires don’t grow old, they are less susceptible to pain and injury, and they are at the upper tier of the social class. This leads to one huge problem. Without a steady diet of blood, vampires degenerate into crazed bat-like beasts that attack anyone in sight. With humans representing only about 5% of the population, there is not enough to around. Natural humans can sustainably produce only about a pint of every sixty days. Killing humans produces more blood in the short term, but overall, only compounds the problem. As the blood supplies dwindle, only the more affluent vampires can afford blood. Human poaching becomes rampant. More and more of the remaining humans are killed, or convert to being vampires to save themselves. Society is on collision course. This is the tale of two brothers, both of whom are vampires, that have very different positions on how to solve the problem. Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) is a scientist who is feverishly looking for a viable blood substitute. He empathizes with the humans, as well as the lower societal vampires that will be reduced to mad blood-lusting beasts, should he fail to find a substitute. Frank Dalton (Edward’s brother) is a mercenary. He is hired by the corporate government to round up all remaining humans and facilitate their assimilation into bleeding farms where there blood can be efficiently harvested. The upper echelon of society is only concerned with their own blood supply and have no interest in the lesser affluent vampires or the humans they feed on. All of Edward’s efforts at a creating substitute hopelessly fail. When the race seems doomed, Edward has a chance encounter with a rouge band of humans and hides them from his brother’s vampire gestapo. By saving them from the bleeding farms, Edward gains their trust and learns that they have a solution....
